How Nicole Covone Learned to Let Go of Fear
In Nicole Covone’s life, fear has been a constant companion. As a child, she was often afraid of the dark and of big, scary animals. As an adult, Nicole has experienced fear in many different ways: as a result of her job as a corporate lawyer, she has dealt with clients who have threatened her with lawsuits; as a mother of two young children, she has been afraid for them on several occasions; and as a triathlete, she has faced fears of running into traffic or of getting lost in the ocean. But through it all, Nicole has learned to let go of fear. Here is how she did it:
1. Start by acknowledging that fear is normal.
Even though Nicole has dealt with fear on a regular basis throughout her life, it was still difficult for her to accept that fear is normal. She would tell herself that she was being irrational or overreacting to harmless situations. But eventually Nicole realized that not all fears are irrational or scary – some are simply part of everyday life.

Nicole Covone, 24, from Stamford, Connecticut struggled with anxiety since she was a young child. “I would always be so anxious and I would have to be in the corner or on the stairs,” she said. “It was really hard for me to socialize.” Even when Nicole started college, her anxiety didn’t ease up. “I would just feel like I couldn’t breathe,” she said. “My heart would start racing and I would get really lightheaded.”
After struggling for years, Nicole decided to take action and get help. She started seeing a therapist and slowly but surely her anxiety started to decrease. “There were definitely some dark times during my journey,” Nicole said, “but I learned to let go of fear and just focus on my goals.” Today, Nicole is thriving and her anxiety doesn’t hold her back from doing anything she wants.

Advice for People Who Struggle with Fear

2. Talk about your fears with someone you trust. Talking about your fears with a trusted friend or family member can help you understand them better and work through them together. It can also help you feel less alone in your struggles.
3. Get active in order to overcome fear. In order to reduce the level of stress that can lead to fear, try engaging in physical activity such as bicycling, hiking, running, or yoga. Exercise releases endorphins, which are chemicals that help reduce anxiety and stress

As a professional dancer, Nicole Covone was always in danger of falling. She would constantly be on the lookout for cracks in the floor, or for any other possible hazard that could cause her to lose her balance and fall. This constant fear of falling eventually took its toll on Nicole’s mental health, as she began to develop anxiety and depression. It was not until she discovered yoga that Nicole realized there might be another way to approach her fear of falling – by working towards mastery of her own body. Through practicing yoga regularly, Nicole gradually overcame her fear of falling and now enjoys dancing without fearing for her safety.
