What Is a Clipping Mask?
When you create a clipping mask in Photoshop, you create a temporary layer that hides part of the image inside it. The clipping mask can be used to hide parts of an image that you don’t want to show on your final product.
To create a clipping mask, open the image that you want to protect and select the layer that you want to use as the clipping mask. Then, click on the “Clipping Mask” icon located in the layers panel (see figure 1).

How to Create a Clipping Mask in Photoshop
When you want to cut out a section of an image, a clipping mask is the perfect tool. You can use it to remove parts of an image without affecting the rest. In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to create a clipping mask in Photoshop.
1. Open your image in Photoshop and select the area that you want to clip.
2. Click on the “Clipping Mask” icon () in the toolbar and choose “Create Clipping Mask”.
3. The “Clipping Mask dialog box” will appear. Here, you can specify how much of the image should be included in the clipping mask. If you want to include only part of the image, enter a percentage value in the “Include” field. For example, if you want to clip out just the bottom half of the image, enter 50% in the “Include” field and click on OK.
